Benjamin's Garden

Benjamin Loved His Garden On December 25th 2011 my son Ben was rushed to hospital and was diagnosed with the flesh eating disease. He barely survived, but he was a fighter. Then infection set in to his throat and he had to have a tube in his throat for several days in order to breathe.  The fighter he is, he pulled through that.  Eventually, he was able to go home for an afternoon but fell and hurt his back, resulting in another operation to fuse T12 and T14 vertebra. With a stiff upper lip, he fought through another painful bout.  You could see all this was taking a toll on him then pneumonia set in.  Still fighting he seemed to make a bit of progress. For 5 long months he fought valiantly and we talked many a long distance hour on the phone. We talked about the designs and their progress. He encouraged me to try and take it easy and not work so hard and long on them and I, in turn, tried to ease a bit of his pain by listening, and getting him involved in the design process as much as I could. He was going to have this beautiful garden quilt to put over his legs while in a wheelchair. On my last visit with him I took all the design blocks for him to see.  He loved them all. I spoke to him on Tuesday evening (22nd) and I could hardly understand him as his speech was so slurred with pain. The flesh eating disease had actually set in again.  Early the next morning, Ben told Angela (his wife) he was just too tired to fight any more.   He passed away Wednesday, May 23rd 2012 about 10:00am and is now in his eternal peaceful garden.   Jackie – Ben’s Mom
